CCJ President Puy Kea Critiques ABC Australia’s Report Over O’Smach Casino Identity Gap Amid Online Scam Coverage
PHNOM PENH — Puy Kea, President of the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ), has pushed back against a recent report by Australia’s ABC News, citing a critical professional oversight where the reporter failed to clarify the historical backdrop of Cambodia’s sovereign territory at the O’Smach casino site, despite welcoming international coverage on the global issue of online scams.
Mr. Puy Kea, President of the Club of Cambodian Journalists (CCJ)—a prominent media association in Cambodia—has reacted to a report by Australian broadcaster ABC. In the report, the foreign journalist was escorted by Thai soldiers into an O’Smach casino in Oddar Meanchey province to cover the aftermath inside a building they had clashed over in December 2025, aiming to showcase evidence of online scam operations.
While the report adhered to standard journalistic formats, the CCJ president noted that the female reporter committed a major professional error: failing to clearly specify the history and background of the location she was reporting from. Instead, she only disclosed the name of the site and focused solely on allegations leveled against Cambodia.
As a seasoned journalist with years of experience and the head of Cambodia’s leading media association, Mr. Puy Kea emphasized this point because it remains a highly sensitive matter that demands precise context. The location is within Cambodia’s sovereign territory, which was encroached upon by Thai troops after a ceasefire went into effect, and has historically been a site of contested military clashes.
His remarks suggest that overlooking or neglecting to clarify such critical details is an unacceptable mistake in reporting, as it misleads the public and breeds ambiguity.
Nevertheless, the CCJ president underlined that reporting on online scams—a pressing global challenge and a matter of widespread public interest—is not something Cambodia takes offense to, even if the reporting takes place on Cambodian soil. This is because Cambodia openly acknowledges the ongoing challenge and continues to demonstrate a strong political will and active commitment to cracking down on these complex crimes.
